2007 has already seen the release of Microsoft's latest software solutions, including Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS), which makes it easier than ever to build powerful intranets and websites. MOSS allows you to personalise your web content and give functionality such as blogs and wikis to users.

We at cScape are very excited about the new range of opportunities for customer engagement in 2007 and here we share some tips on how to achieve it through MOSS.

Do pass this newsletter on to anyone you think might be interested in cutting-edge technologies and engaging web solutions.

Best wishes

It's personal

Personalising content to match your key audiences is absolutely vital to improve audience retention. With MOSS you can target content effectively and create a more compelling website which your users will keep coming back to.

Read a summary of Ben Robb's speech on personalisation delivered at the first European Microsoft SharePoint conference in Berlin - a three day event involving speakers from Microsoft and partner companies.

Facing the net

At the same conference, Ben Robb also gave a speech about deploying and managing internet-facing websites using MOSS. He gave some tips on how to brand and style websites, how to enable caching and anonymous access to make a site support millions of users, and how to safeguard against unauthorised content editing and attacks from hackers. All of which was very well received.

Top 10 accessibility tips

Accessible sites are easy to use and can be interesting, fun, innovative and visually stimulating. Users with different technologies (old computers, mobiles, TVs, Personal Digital Assistants), different learning difficulties and physical impairments can all benefit from more accessible sites.

  • Make all non-text items (flash, images, pod casts) available as text (alt tags, transcripts)
  • Don't put too much information on a page and don't repeat sets of links or content
  • Label all buttons, fields and dropdown selectors
  • Don't make anything happen on the page that the user can't control
  • Using links, always tell your user what is going to happen; change page, refresh page, open new window, go to new website and so on
  • Make sure to use the same text for different links to one site area - but never use the same text for different targets!
  • Ensure all features can be used without a mouse
  • Structure pages with headings to divide up, and explain relationships between, the content
  • Use shortcuts, like access keys and skip-to-content, to help users to find information quickly
  • Use style sheets that can be turned off or overridden - and make sure your colour combinations are readable by all
