Context
The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) is the leading professional body for librarians and information specialists. CILIP monitor and promote standards of excellence in the creation and usage of information and knowledge resources. CILIP has up to 21,000 members; their intake is expanding to incorporate new professions such as information architecture and knowledge management.
Challenge
Professional development is central to CILIP’s remit; their qualifications are recognised globally. When CILIP wanted to relaunch their professional development package in early 2005 they asked cScape to develop a database to support the expanded Framework of Qualifications.
Solution
We implemented a Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server solution and adapted it to address CILIP’s specific requirements. Microsoft’s solution provides a secure, accessible collaborative tool with views that can be customised and filtered. We extended standard SharePoint functionality to facilitate administration of the qualification process. Continuing Professional Development Officers now have remote access to candidate records and can submit documents online; it is also possible to capture information from candidates.
Outcome
Increased efficiency and a platform for collaborative working that can be adapted to support other initiatives. According to Marion Huckle, CILIP’s Head of Qualifications and Professional Development, “cScape’s work has streamlined the administrative processes involved in running the Framework of Qualifications. It enables us to delegate day-to-day administration to officers in remote locations and concentrate on new developments.”
