Centrica Intranet redesign

Context

Centrica plc provides gas and electricity to millions of domestic and business customers through leading brands such as British Gas, with related operations including production, marketing, international retail, telecommunications and equipment sales. The organisation aims to create a culture of collaboration; it prioritises the pursuit of value-based best practice, talent management and investment in people – and the effective use of information technology across its businesses.

Challenge

Centrica uses its intranet to communicate with over 40,000 employees working for six sub-brands worldwide. The group wanted user interfaces that reinforced the distinctive identity of each brand within a unified framework.

Solution

Our design team created an individual design concept for each Centrica brand, so that employees see different interfaces depending on which brand they work for. To support team-working, we also designed neutral working spaces for employees from different brands to collaborate on projects. The user interfaces we designed for Centrica’s intranet were informed by our familiarity with SharePoint Portal Server implementations. Our consultants produced proof of concept demos to assist Centrica’s information services teams, both as training tools and to ensure buy-in across the organisation.

Outcome

Our understanding of Centrica’s brand and user needs, coupled with thorough technical knowledge, enabled us to produce designs that facilitated the implementation process. “cScape has proven to be a key partner for us in the delivery of this new platform,” says Terry Boyland, head of business systems, Centrica plc. “Their guidance in areas of usability and governance has been greatly valued by the internal team.”
