Top 3 free search engine optimisation tools
Richard Sedley gives some tips on how to optimise your site with some easy-to-use and free tools.
Google Keyword Tool
Enter some of the keywords that you feel might be appropriate for your page and press ‘get more keywords’. The tool will show you what related keywords and phrases are currently being searched for on Google and give you a rough indication of whether a lot of people are searching on that term. If you feel they are suitable you could rewrite some of your page copy to include one or more references to the tool’s selections.
Yahoo Keyword Tool
Like the Google Keyword Tool this one is also useful for finding out what words people are searching on. The difference is that the Yahoo Keyword Tool tells you exactly how many people searched using Yahoo. While many more people use Google, there is something much more compelling about seeing the real numbers – and if you are just looking for suggestions on words to include in your headlines and text you might be better off starting here.
Abakus Topword Tool
For most search engines, the more you mention a key term the better. This tool makes it simple to count your keyword mentions. Paste the URL of one of your pages into the tool and then click 'analyse'. Try comparing your keyword density with one of your competitors.
